Ed Hyde played cricket for Tonbridge and Cambridge University, where he was also a rackets Blue. He plays cricket and rackets for both OT Clubs. Here he shares his playlist with us.

1. Rockin’ All Over the World – Status Quo

I first heard this song whilst sitting in Dave Makey’s office when at Tonbridge. Dave always had Planet Rocket radio station on and this song reminds me of many happy hours spent chatting absolute rubbish in Dave’s office!

2. Freed from Desire – Gala

This song had never really grabbed my attention prior to the 2016 European Championships. However, it became popular during the Championships and it was frequently belted out in the Ferox Hall TV room whilst watching the matches.

3. Mrs Robinson – Simon & Garfunkel

I am a massive Stoke City FC fan and the tune to Mrs Robinson was adopted as a Stoke chant for one of Stoke’s former goalkeepers, Asmir Begovic. The song reminds me of the cracking saves pulled off by Begovic and the good times following Stoke all over the country.

4. Tonbridge School Hymn

At Tonbridge, I remember getting annoyed that we didn’t sing the School hymn more often, however looking back I feel that saving the hymn for special occasions made it more memorable and ensured that everyone was really up for it. I still listen to it on YouTube every now and then.

5. Somebody That I Used to Know - Goyte

I’ve always thought that this was a good song, however I started to listen to it more after Alex Moen (FH 13-18) had performed it during a late-night karaoke session at university. He performed it so well that it has been a firm favourite ever since.

6. Shout – The Isley Brothers

This song is used as a soundtrack at the start of Wedding Crashers – one of my favourite films. The film was a favourite for most of the 1st XI cricket team at Tonbridge, to such an extent that we spent a lot of time in the field quoting lines from it and singing the soundtrack.

7. Jerusalem

Always a neck-hair raiser!

8. Give It Up - KC and The Sunshine Band

This song became a post-game tradition for my university cricket team. Whenever I hear it now, it brings back many happy memories of belting it out in various changing rooms and on coaches/railway station platforms. I also remember singing it during car journeys with a Tonbridge friend in Australia during my gap year - we belted it out with the car windows down as we drove through the middle of Perth.

Book:

Luck by Ed Smith. Prior to reading the book, I was a bit sceptical on the concept of luck. However, I really enjoy reading this book because I find it provides perspective and a timely reminder that there are many forces operating beyond our control.

Luxury Item:

Egg Custard Tarts. I was introduced to egg custard tarts from a very young age and ever since I haven’t stopped eating them. I find they are filling and provide a good amount of energy. I remember walking to Waitrose in Tonbridge twice a week to stock up on them and the legendary Ferox matron, Liz Hamilton, even purchased some for me on a couple of occasions.
