The Last 10 Fallen: 2nd Lieutenant D Campbell

Died, aged 40, of influenza and bronchopneumonia contracted on Active Service in Rouen, France

Died in Rouen, France on 27 November 1918, aged 40, of influenza and bronchopneumonia contracted on Active Service.

2nd Lieut. Duncan Campbell Sc (1890-95) was the only son of Mr and Mrs Robert Campbell. On leaving Tonbridge, he adopted a business career and was for a time at Marseilles. After some years in London he joined a firm in Singapore in 1910, and from June 1914, was with the same firm at Kuala Lumpur.

He joined the Volunteer Force at Kuala Lumpur on the outbreak of war, and as soon as his agreement with this firm permitted, he came home to serve. In December 1917 he was commissioned in the Special Reserve of the Royal Garrison Artillery.

Going out to France in February 1918, he was posted to the 53rd Siege Battery, with which he served in different parts of the line, and in the great German offensive which commenced on March 21st had a narrow escape in the Cambrai sector.

He was subsequently attached to the 4th Army Gun Park till he came home on leave in October.

Immediately after his return from leave he developed influenza whilst in a lonely section of the Gun Park, and, bronchopneumonia supervening, died in hospital at Rouen on November 27th 1918.

His Commanding Officer wrote to Mrs. Campbell: "I had the greatest respect for your son, Duncan - so full of patriotism and always such a model of a gentleman. I was really downright sorry when he left the Battery as I was very fond of him and admired his many sterling qualities… You can rest assured that no man ever did his duty for his country more conscientiously."
