Sherlock Holmes - "Elementary, my dear Watson"
A lecture by Catherine Cooke, Chair of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London
for the Tennant Lecture Series
Thursday 28 September 2023
Lecture in Big School at 8pm
Though not the first fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes is arguably the best known. By the 1990s, there were already over 25,000 stage adaptations, films, television productions and publications featuring the detective and he is surely one of the most recognisable characters ever created. Many other detectives followed in his footsteps, but few, if any, have had the impact of Holmes. Why might this be?
This lecture, given by Catherine Cooke, who is Chair of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, will look at the life of his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and attempt to answer the questions about Holmes’ enduring appeal, with particular reference to those who have impersonated him on stage and screen. This will be a fascinating talk about the world's most famous detective.
This event is fully accessible.
