Samurai Exhibition
at the British Museum
Monday 27 April 2026
12pm to 2pm
Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3DG
.
Explore a thousand years of history, myth and cultural influence at this major exhibition on the samurai. Step beyond the stereotypes to discover the real story of Japan’s legendary warrior class — from their rise to power in the 1100s to their transformation into an elite social group shaping government, scholarship and the arts. The exhibition reveals how samurai ideals evolved over time, how women were part of this world, and how the modern myth of bushidō emerged long after the age of the warriors themselves.
Visitors can see remarkable objects ranging from battle armour — including the suit sent by Tokugawa Hidetada to James VI and I — to exquisite luxury items such as incense games. The exhibition also explores the samurai’s lasting impact on global culture, with examples from fashion, film and gaming, including a Louis Vuitton design inspired by armour and references to Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.
