Jewish London and the Holocaust
A Walking Tour
meet at Peter's Cafe, opposite Aldgate Tube Station
11.30am to 1.30pm
Discover the story of Jewish London through a powerful journey of life, refuge, threat, destruction and memory. This respectful, human-centred 2-hour tour begins at Bevis Marks Synagogue (1701), highlighting centuries-old Sephardi Jewish life and the fragile balance between tolerance and vulnerability in Britain.
We visit key sites, including Cable Street and Liverpool Street Station, exploring how London became both a place of refuge and a witness to history. The Kindertransport is brought to life here - 10,000 Jewish children rescued, most never reunited with their parents, who were murdered in the Holocaust.
Along the way, we explain the Holocaust clearly and factually: ghettos, deportations, extermination and Britain's knowledge and limitations. We also reflect on the UK's connection to Bergen-Belsen and the survivors who rebuilt their lives here.
Join us on this concise, moving walk that shows the Holocaust destroyed not only lives, but an entire civilisation - and how memory continues in the streets of London today.
If you would like to come along earlier for a coffee prior to the walk, please do. We shall meet at Peter's Cafe, opposite Aldgate Tube Station. The walk commences at 11.30am. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for an outdoor walk.
