London's Lost Rivers - the Buried River Tyburn
Friday 21st January at 11.00am
Join us for another guided walk by Paul Talling, author of London’s Lost Rivers, this time following the route of the buried River Tyburn through Marylebone and Mayfair. The route will start at Baker Street station and finish at Green Park Station.
Paul draws information from his own book, Victorian publications, ancient and modern maps showing the river running partly under Buckingham Palace, Park Lane and Oxford Street. We will be guided along the ‘banks’ of the Tyburn close to New Bond Street, where It is said that “ducks once wandered about among the long grass and puddles, women did their washing at the water's edge and a hospital for plague victims was erected near the open fields.”
As always, Paul will regale us with local tales en-route, from the Baker Street bank robbery, the birthplace of Queen Elizabeth II, Twiggy, Radio Luxembourg, Banksy, to an abandoned Tube Station and more……! If you’re a music or football fan, you’ll love it!
The walk will last approximately 3 hours, is entirely outdoors and will proceed regardless of weather, so please dress accordingly.
Places: 15
Cost: £18.50
Sadly, this event is not accessible for those in a wheelchair.
