The following obituary was written by Victor Dauppe (HS 66-70)
DAUPPE Andre
Died peacefully on 5 April 2026, aged 86, in Buffalo, USA.
Andre graduated from London School of Economics and then attended the University of Sorbonne in France studying Philosophy. He spent his entire career in Steel, firstly with Richard Thomas and Baldwin in Sheffield, then British Steel and then US Steel. Andre’s work with US Steel included postings in their Middle East liaison office in Cairo and in their Europe office in Düsseldorf, where his German (honed by Richard Austin at Tonbridge) proved useful. When US Steel withdrew internationally, he relocated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA and later to Buffalo New York State USA, where he lived until his death with his wife Carol, whom he married at Christmastide 1979 in England. Andre had two children Nicole, born in Pittsburgh and Alex born in Buffalo. Perhaps the nicest thing said at his cremation in Buffalo was voiced by a neighbour who said “Andre was a gentle man and a gentleman.
Andre’s ashes will be formally interred in his mother’s grave at St Giles the Abbot, Church Road, Farnborough, BR6 7DB on 20 August at 11.00 am. Contemporaries, family and friends are welcome.
