Nick McCarthy (SH 2012-14) Senior GenAI Solution Architect Amazon Web Services (AWS)
After leaving Tonbridge, Nick studied Physics at UCL gaining a First Class Honours and followed this with a MSc with Distinction. He began his career as a Data Scientist at Eigen Technologies and then moved onto a role as an Intern Machine Learning Researcher at XAI Asset Management. However, for the past five years he has worked for Amazon, initially in London, but from the start of this year he has been based in New York as a Senior Specialist Solution Architect. Nick will explain what this role entails and tell us what skills he believes are required to excel in this area.
Rory McAllister (FH 2008-13) Senior R&D Engineer at PCS Instruments
Rory studied for an MEng at Imperial from 2013-17 and completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2021. His first role was as a Systems Engineer at Cambridge Mechatronics and from there he moved to PCS Instruments based in London, designing and manufacturing equipment for the testing of fuels, as a senior R&D engineer. Rory will give an insight into how he has translated his academic work into a commercial setting and explain the responsibilities he has as a senior Research and Development Engineer.
Iman Hansra (SH 2011-15) Senior Aerodynamicist Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team
Iman left Tonbridge with a clean sweep of A* at GCSE and A Level. He also chose Imperial College, London gaining a First Class Honours in Aeronautical Engineering with a Year in Industry (MEng). After completing work experience with Williams, Iman also did his placement year with Williams as a Junior Aerodynamicist and then accepted a position as a Competitor Analyst with the team. Since 2021 he has worked at Mercedes-AMG Petronas, firstly on their graduate scheme and since March of this year as their Senior Aerodynamicist, Iman will talk about his current role and the importance of work experience, placements and graduate schemes in helping him land the job he has now.
Stuart Young (Current Parent) Senior Front End Development Manager, Shell
Stuart studied Geology at the University of Southampton from 1994–97, and later earned a Master’s with distinction in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot-Watt University. Over the last 25 years, his career in the energy industry has taken him to some truly extraordinary places.
He started out as a Geologist in hard rock mining and on drilling rigs with Halliburton and Baker Hughes, working in Australia, New Zealand, East Timor and Papua New Guinea. After retraining as a Petroleum Engineer, Stuart joined BG Group, where he spent 11 years in roles that moved him from the UK to Brisbane, Australia and Pittsburgh in the USA.
For the past eight years, Stuart has worked for Shell, taking on major development projects that have led him from Brisbane and Perth in Australia to Sakhalin Island in Russia and then to Lagos, Nigeria. His work has covered everything from onshore shale and coal seam gas to shallow-water fields and onto cutting-edge deep-water developments.
Stuart now supports new development opportunities in Brazil’s world-famous pre-salt basin. Drawing on his global experience, he’ll share how a background in engineering and geoscience can open doors to international travel, exciting challenges and a wide variety of career paths that his varied skill set has afforded him.
