Spring Flower Painting using
a Bamboo Pen and Ink with Michaela Gall
Wednesday 18 March 2026
11.00am to 1.00pm
Doubleton Lane, Penshurst
In this workshop, British artist Michaela Gall will show us how drawing with a traditional bamboo pen dipped in ink can be both expressive and poetic. No previous experience is required. Using bamboo pens hand-carved by Michaela, we will learn techniques of drawing with bamboo and ink on paper and also painting with a wash. Looking at early Chinese scroll works and Van Gogh pen and ink landscapes, we will be guided to create our own drawings of spring flowers and blossom picked from Michaela's garden in Penshurst.
A truly unique opportunity not to be missed, the beautiful and unique paintings created will be ready to take home at the end of the class. You will also be able to take home your own bamboo pen to create more pieces at home.
Michaela studied at Chelsea College of Art and on an exchange programme at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. She works as a ceramicist and painter from her studio in Penshurst, Kent and has kindly opened up her home and working space for our very special class. Her recent projects include 170 plates chronicling the characters and history of Soho for the restaurant walls of Dear Jackie at the Broadwick Soho Hotel in London.
