A Private Willow Weaving Workshop
Staplehurst Tennis and Cricket Club
Thursday 29 January 2026
9.30am to 4.30pm
If you have ever fancied having a go at working with willow, now is your chance to make a gorgeous animal sculpture on our private one-day willow weaving course. Our instructor will teach us how to craft one of up to 15 charming designs of animals (ranging in size from 2 feet to over 5 feet!), using a free weaving technique. The willow we will use is of high quality and sourced from the Somerset Levels. Famous for its wetland areas, it has continued to produce some of the finest willow around, for over 200 years. The willow is harvested during the winter months so it provides an important ecological habitat for wildlife during the summer.
The design choices available to us include:
A gazing hare, a rabbit, a pecking chicken, a looking up chicken, a duck, a runner duck, a goose, a pheasant, a Highland cow head, a piglet, a lobster, a snail, a heron, a squirrel or a tortoise.
The workshop includes all instruction, materials and tools required to complete a small animal of your choice. All guests will finish the day with a unique creation to take away with them ready to display indoors or in the garden. In the unlikely event that any attendee is unable to complete their sculpture during the course time, materials and instruction will be given to enable them to complete it at home.
This workshop is suitable for anyone with reasonable hand/wrist strength, but absolutely no experience is needed.
Comfortable old clothes are recommended as working with willow can sometimes be rather messy, although aprons will be provided.
There will be a plentiful supply of tea, coffee and soft drinks throughout the day. Please bring your own snacks and a packed lunch.
Please note you will be asked to read and complete a health and safety waiver form on the day. If you would like to see this in advance, please contact the event co-ordinator.
Places: 10
Cost: £94.50
