for the Tennant Lecture Series
Thursday 7 November 2024
Lecture in Big School at 8pm

James Cowan was educated at Wellington College and read History at Pembroke College, Oxford. As a young officer he served in Berlin, Northern Ireland, Africa and Hong Kong, and later in his career he was involved in the liberation of Kosovo, the invasion of Iraq and the war in Afghanistan. He also led the military security operation for the London Olympics.
Since 2015, James has run The HALO Trust, the world's largest NGO tackling the causes and consequences of conflict in over 30 countries. Princess Diana raised the profile of the charity in 1997, when she was photographed watching their work in Angola. James will describe how war is damaging lives and livelihoods in places as different as Ukraine, Gaza and Afghanistan - and tell us about the remarkable work of the HALO Trust.
