We invite you to a fascinating talk and tour to discover the legacy of the renowned author Jane Austen's father, the esteemed Reverend George Austen.
The talk will take place in The Skinners' Library here at Tonbridge - a place deeply connected to George Austen, as he not only attended our School as an intelligent and skilful scholar but later became Second Master, alongside Headmaster Cawthorn.
The pupil George won several prizes and exhibitions while at School, rewarded by The Skinners' Company or through their connections, most notably a Fellowship at Oxford, the St John's College Thomas Whyte Fellowship.
We are honoured to have Zoe Wheddon, the author of Jane Austen, Daddy's Girl, The Life and Influence of The Revd George Austen presenting at this event. Zoe's passion and expertise for the subject will surely provide an enriching experience for all attendees. We will listen to Zoe's 45-minute talk after which there will be ample time for questions. She will then guide us around the School premises, highlighting areas significant to George's history. It should be noted that there aren't many buildings left in place from when he started his education as a nine year old day boy, about 90 years after the foundation of our School.
Please join us for this enlightening talk as we explore the remarkable history and influence of The Reverend George Austen.
