FORGOTTEN FOUNDERS: THE JUDDE-SMYTHE FAMILY A Talk by Simon Targett for the Tennant Lecture Series
Histories of the founding of America focus on the role of the Pilgrims; and on the founding of British Empire, they focus on the expansionary ambitions of Elizabeth I. The real founders, however, were London’s leading merchants - chief among them, Sir Andrew Judde. His entrepreneurial family masterminded a stream of commercial enterprises dedicated to discovery, exploration, development, and settlement. This lecture, led by award-winning journalist, Simon Targett, tells the story of what caused Sir Andrew and his fellow merchants to begin the search for new markets beyond Europe.
Please join us for drinks in the Lowry Dining Room from 7.30pm prior to the talk, which will start at 8.00pm in the Cawthorne Lecture Theatre. No booking is required, so please just turn up.
