Jason Wu (FH3) celebrates online chess success in school’s first remote competition

Congratulations to Jason Wu (FH3) who was the victor of a Tonbridge community online chess competition that took place over two afternoons this week involving 35 boys and 4 staff members.

The hastily-arranged competition was organised by Tonbridge School mathematics teacher, Vadim Myslov, using the www.chess.com platform. Mr Myslov used the open mic function to run commentary during the event, keeping competitors entertained during the 4 hours.

“Online chess has been scientifically proven to have a 0% transmission rate for the coronavirus,” joked Mr Myslov, in the school-wide invitation sent out on the day that boys were leaving the school because of the pandemic.

The competition was Swiss format, meaning that in each of the six rounds contestants played someone with a similar number of wins.  Players were allowed 5 minutes and 3 seconds per move which is known as ‘blitz’ rather than ‘rapid play’ chess.

As Mr Myslov explained: “Some excellent matches were played throughout the competition. School board #1 Hayden Lam (FH2) was looking the favourite to win it, particularly after surviving his fifth round match against school #2 Benjamin Gardener (CH4), but ended up losing his final match to Jason Wu.

“Jason has made an amazing improvement in his chess since learning to play in September, and finished the competition undefeated, scoring 5½ out of 6.”

Jason was awarded one month’s Gold Membership to chess.com as his victory prize.
The top 20 placed competitors were:
