Ben Earl's Essential Playlist

Listen to Ben Earl's (JH 11-16) Essential Playlist, featuring The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Dusky.
Ben, his Mum, Dad and brother James (JH 15-20)
Ben, his Mum, Dad and brother James (JH 15-20)

This photo is of me with my family. They have been so instrumental in the successes I’ve had in my short career, and have also been my biggest supporters in times of difficulty and struggle. Just looking at this photo makes me smile. It was taken in August and a lot has happened since then!

1. Something - The Beatles

My dad is a Beatles fanatic and this is the song that takes me back to long car journeys with him and the family to rugby, cricket and other sporting endeavours that my brother and I would take part in.

2. You Make Me Feel So Young - Frank Sinatra

This was the first vinyl record I was given when my Dad gave me his old record player (so he could buy a new one). I recently watched a BBC documentary on Sinatra and he was not only an amazing singer but also had an incredible story! Also this song is in the film Elf, so it’s as good an excuse as any!

3. Pray - Take That

My Nanny, Sally, was a massive Take That fan and this reminds me of my prep school days, driving to and from school. She was a massive part of our family for about 14 years so it always brings back brilliant memories!

4. The Tonbridge School Hymn

Although we as a whole school sung this very rarely, it always stirred something inside me. Just singing it made me truly proud to be a Tonbridgian and reminds me how privileged I was being at such a brilliant school.

5. Angela - The Lumineers

I am unashamedly a huge Lumineers fan. This is my favourite one of their tracks, I tend to listen to them when cooking, reading, napping or just generally chilling out!

6. She’s Electric - Oasis

Although a slightly different genre to my other choices, I loved watching the Oasis documentary Supersonic. I just love everything about this song and I actually chose to sing this on the bus after making my England debut!

7. The Rapture Pt. II - &Me

This reminds me of a more specific memory. It was the first song I heard on my trip to Ibiza in 2022 with a group of mates. Always puts a smile on my face when things don’t seem so positive. There’s always something good round the corner.

8. Careless - Dusky

On my return to Tonbridge recently to see some of the pupils and staff, I was asked "What is your pre-match hype up song?" quite a few times. So here it is! I listened to this one constantly, from the Premiership Final last summer all the way to the World Cup Semi Final vs South Africa! I enjoy the beat in the track and I feel it starts to prepare me mentally for what’s to come.

Luxury Item:

It would have to be my coffee machine, a La Marzocco Linea Mini (also known as the Ferrari of Coffee machines!). I bought it a couple of years back and I love it. I’m really into my coffee art and love hosting mates and sitting around gossiping over a brew. Honourable mentions to my golf clubs also!

Book:

Not necessarily a novel as such but I would take my A-Level (and heavily annotated) copy of Arden Shakespeare’s King Lear. I still have it on my bookshelf and when in one of my nostalgic moods will always open it up and give it a read. I loved studying it and deciphering its many different messages. Also, if I’m stuck on a desert island then I can at least identify with the main protagonist!
