Tonbridge School baker donates hand-made bread to Sustain Food Bank

Tonbridge School baker, Tim Bedford was busy making his delicious large bloomer loaves this week. Last week, handmade loaves were donated to Sustain food bank, along with vast numbers of eggs, milk, cheese, yoghurts, fresh fruit and vegetables, some dried store cupboard stocks and even loo rolls.

Sustain is run by Tonbridge Baptist Church for those living in Tonbridge facing food poverty. Located in north Tonbridge it serves an area which rates in the lowest 20% of deprived areas in Britain, something that is difficult to remember when you see the wealth in other areas of our town. The food bank currently supports over thirty families on a regular basis, with many more accessing their support when necessary. They are concerned that the current Covid-19 crisis will see both an increase in those needing support as well as a decrease in those who are able to donate, partly due to the practicalities of self-isolation.

The school is looking at how we can best continue to support our local community both in the short term and going forward into the summer.
