The Falklands War
A talk by Lord Charles Moore for the Tennant Lecture Series
Tuesday 14 June at 8.00pm
In April 1982, Argentinian forces invaded the British overseas territory of the Falkland Islands. Despite the huge distance involved (7,900 miles), Britain, under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher, undertook the extraordinary feat of assembling and sending a task force, to take back the islands. The conflict was a major episode in the protracted dispute over the territories' sovereignty. Argentina asserted that the islands are Argentine territory, and the Argentine government characterised its military action as the reclamation of its own territory. The British government regarded the action as an invasion. The Argentinian forces eventually surrendered on 14 June 1982, exactly forty years ago from the date of this talk. Lord Moore, Margaret Thatcher’s official biographer and past editor of the Spectator and Daily Telegraph, will talk us through this remarkable conflict, which captivated the country and changed the course of British political history.
