This summer, William Thomson [PS 01-06] launched a series of YouTube ‘Tide Tutorials’ for all ages, exploring the natural processes that make tides, waves, winds and currents. Targeted to anyone who enjoys water sports, the videos are designed to empower people to ‘Seas the Power’ - whether it’s sailing, surfing, swimming, scuba-diving or stand up paddle-boarding. Blending cinematic drone footage with real life demonstrations, the videos simply explain the workings of the ocean and have already been featured by PADI, the worldwide scuba diving institution.

Thomson, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and author of The Book of Tides, teamed up with videographer brothers Ollie and Tom Neame for the project. Topics include what makes the tide, how it makes currents and why the moon phase is so important when planning adventures. The series itself is even synchronised with the lunar month, with new episodes uploaded to YouTube on the days of the four main moon phases.

As for long-term plans, William is currently planning to build a 10-metre catamaran to sail the world with his family [partner Naomi, 5-year old daughter Ottilie and 2-year old son Arva]. The driving force for the voyage is to explore solutions to rising tides, an adventure he will document through this new YouTube channel Tidal Compass. The fundraiser starts on the September Equinox and you can follow progress at: www.tidalcompass.com
