Tonbridge School staff respond to the Covid-19 Pandemic

We hear from volunteers working on various projects at Tonbridge. From helping at the NHS Assessment Centre to making lunches, everyone is chipping in.

149 volunteers, of which 120 are staff plus 29 ‘friends’, have been helping at the school in various ways over the Easter break. Of the volunteers this includes many teaching staff, who have since resumed their teaching roles now that the Summer Term has begun.

There are various voluntary positions which have been divided up among the staff who put their names forward to volunteer. These range from traffic marshals near the NHS Assessment Centre, reception staff for the TSC help desk for enquiries from NHS staff, laundry volunteers to wash scrubs used by the NHS staff, catering staff making lunches and volunteer drivers.

Jo Boler, matron at Park House, is a volunteer at the NHS Assessment Centre. “I worked on the reception desk at the TSC, taking deliveries and helping medical staff with any questions about the site. One of the nice things was working with staff with very different roles around the school and getting to know them better. I also worked with a neighbour who lives across the road from Park House, which was great.”

She said: “The NHS staff working at the site are just lovely and they appreciate what the school is doing to help.” She described how NHS staff use the TSC for breaks before and after their shifts. “The food provided by school is particularly appreciated,” she explained, “because sometimes the NHS staff go onto their usual jobs at hospitals or surgeries after finishing their shift at the Assessment Centre.”

Helen Chappenden, Box Office Manager at the EM Forster Theatre, and others have had their sewing machines out making protective gowns for NHS workers. As she explained: “I wanted to put my spare time to good use for the NHS because a year ago I had a major operation, so I have recent, first-hand experience of the care, kindness and dedication of doctors and nurses at Pembury and Kings College London hospitals. I also have several friends who work for the NHS and, like many people, I want to do what I can to help.”
