'From Oklahoma to Phantom of the Opera - the History of the Modern Musical'
A lecture by Ian Gledhill for the Tennant Lecture Series
Tuesday 21 February 2023
Drinks in the EM Forster Theatre Foyer from 7.30 pm
Lecture in the EM Forster Theatre at 8.00 pm
Although music has been a part of dramatic presentations since ancient times, modern Western musical theatre emerged during the 19th century, with many structural elements established by the works of Gilbert and Sullivan in Britain and those of Harrigan and Hart in America. This talk looks at the development of the modern musical from the Second World War onwards, beginning with the ground-breaking Oklahoma of 1943, through to Andrew Lloyd-Webber's long-running Phantom of the Opera, one of the most successful shows in the history of the theatre. Ian Gledhill, who began his career as an engineer, has spent much of his working life in musical theatre, both as a Set Designer and Director. This talk will be illustrated with film clips and music from the shows. Ian is a superb speaker and if you enjoy musical theatre, this is a talk not to be missed.
This event is fully accessible.
